McKay’s History

McKay was organized in July of 1969 by the senior engineering staff of Yuba Manufacturing Company and later joined by Paceco senior engineering staff. We were incorporated in the State of California in December of 1969 and have been helping clients worldwide from our California offices ever since. Originally founded in Benicia, CA, we have returned our offices to Benicia after a period in Richmond, CA during the 1990s.

Benicia is a quiet little town with a lot of history. More information on the history of Benicia can be found in this Wikipedia article or you can visit The City of Benicia website.

McKay was founded by Ken Dewing, Don Harlander, and Ralph Hughes. So why the McKay name? Well, McKay is a popular surname in Benicia, and about the time the three founding principals were starting our company, there was a new apartment complex being built on the waterfront in Benicia named the McKay Apartments. Eventually one of these buildings would house our first offices and, rather than change the sign out front, we adopted “McKay” as part of our name along with “International” to reflect the new trend in containerization and international trade. The “Engineers” was added to reflect what it is that we do.
